The math department at UNC-CH will host the AMC-8 contest on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, starting at 6:30 pm in Phillips Hall room 332 on UNC campus. The paper version of the test (not the digital version) will be offered.
If UNC is closed because of snow, the contest will be postponed to a day TBD that will be posted here. Otherwise the contest will happen as usual. You can check the status by going to unc.edu and looking for a banner. Condition 1 means UNC is open, and Condition 2 means classes are cancelled and the contest will be postponed. As of 8 am Wednesday, UNC is still open and the contest is on.
The AMC-8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics containing challenging and interesting problems. Students across the United States and Canada take this contest every year. Any students in grade 8 and below can participate. Calculators are not allowed.
Please visit the MAA website for general information on the AMC-8 . The Art of Problem Solving maintains an extensive collection old AMC-8 contests which you can use to practice.
There is no required fee to take the contest at UNC-Chapel Hill; however, a $10 donation to the math department is suggested to help cover the cost of contest materials. Donations can be made at: https://give.unc.edu/donate?p=MATH or can be made in person on the day of the contest, by cash or check made out to UNC Math Department.
